From sceptic to super fan: How Ralphie the cockapoo won me over

Updated: Aug 14, 2024

When I first met Ralphie, the family’s fluffy Cockapoo, I was a bit sceptical. Smaller and "modern" breeds just weren’t my thing. I loved Rotties, boxers, labs! But Ralphie had other plans.

Ralphie taught me that size isn’t everything. This little guy has the heart of a lion and the loyalty of, well, a Lab! Ralphie’s not just an adorable face—he’s a constant companion, shadowing Victoria, Chris, and their daughter, Luna Poppy, through their daily routines. Whether he’s waiting patiently at the gate as they tend to the chickens or curling up on the bed at night, Ralphie is always by their side.

When I first met Ralphie as his pet sitter, I thought, “He’s cute, but not really my type.” His fur was so fluffy it reminded me of a carpet, and I admit, I might have jokingly referred to him as such. But it didn’t take long for Ralphie to prove that he’s more than just a pretty face, or a carpet.

He was quiet and calm from the first car ride, his little eyes curiously scanning the world as we drove. On our walks, he proved to be a social butterfly, charming even the most uninterested dogs into a game of chase. Taking him to the local pub was a delight—he sat quietly, enjoying his doggie deli treat (which turned out to be no more than two tiny sausages and some random veggies), all while winning over the hearts of everyone who passed by.

I even took him on a playdate with Dougal, an Irish terrier. Dougal was incredibly excited, and I was impressed with how Ralphie’s calm demeanor had a soothing effect on him. Within 10 minutes, they were the best of friends, exploring the local forest together and bonding for life. I also took Ralphie sightseeing in Cranbrook, and even a ride in a Range Rover—new territory for him—didn’t faze this little man.

Ralphie may be small, but he’s big in all the ways that matter. He’s turned this once-skeptic into a full-fledged super fan, showing me that love

and loyalty aren’t about size—they’re about heart. And Ralphie’s got plenty of that to go around.

So, Ralphie, I stand corrected. You’re no ‘carpet’—you’re a true companion, and I feel so fortunate to have met you.
