The great lab adventure: Bella, Barney, and the Sheep Pond Extravaganza

Updated: Jun 8, 2024

Taking care of two labs is always an adventure, especially when one’s a golden girl named Bella and the other’s an old boy named Barney, also lovingly called 'podge'. Our daily trips to the fields are nothing short of eventful. Bellay is a storm, advancing like a trooper, while Barney lags behind, taking his sweet time. But today? Oh, today was a special kind of chaos.

It all started with Barney’s stubborn refusal to leave the car. I opened one door, and he nonchalantly moved to the other side of the backseat. Walk to the other side, and he’s right back to his original spot. Classic Barney. After a few rounds of this doggy hide-and-seek, I gave up and left him there, setting out with Bella, who was eager as ever.

We’re in the fields, successfully avoiding the sheep because let’s be honest, Bella might just feel inspired to chase them. Finally, we find a field without any sheep, and I decide it’s safe to let her off the lead. Big mistake. Recall? Not a chance. Off she goes, and I’m sprinting down the field like it’s the Olympics.

I find her in a pond, with a sheep. Fabulous. Without thinking, I jump over the fence into the freezing cold February water. Now, Bella and I are flapping around, tripping over each other, while the poor sheep is probably questioning all its life choices. It takes a good ten minutes to wrangle Sandy out of the water.

I tie her to a pole and go back for the sheep, which is thankfully unharmed. My heart, on the other hand, is pounding like mad. Barney? Still in the car, probably wondering what all the fuss is about. Just another day in the life with Bella and Barney.

No animals were hurt during this event or during the creation of this story. The names of the pets have been changed to protect their reputation.
